What is a precision shaft

/

/

There are many types of shafts. Our common ones are mechanical drive shafts, motor shafts, Fan shafts, knurled shaft, screw shafts, and crankshafts. Because the usage scenarios of the axes are different. The required precision is also different. For high-precision mechanical shafts, the accuracy is usually about ±0.0001". This kind of precision shaft must be machined by high-precision CNC. After precision grinding, the surface Roughness is generally controlled at about Ra0.2~0.4um. Diameter Runout and end runout tolerances are controlled to ±0.0002". It can be called a precision shaft. /

What materials are suitable for shafts
  • Carbon steel is commonly used in shaft materials such as 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 high-quality carbon steel, especially 45(DIN 1.1191) class is the most widely used. Shafts made of high-quality carbon steel should generally be normalized or modulated to improve the mechanical properties of the material. Unimportant or less stressed shafts can be made of ordinary carbon steel such as Q235A, Q255A, Q275A, and generally do not undergo heat treatment.

  •  Alloy Steel Alloy steel has better mechanical properties and heat treatment properties than carbon steel. However, it is more sensitive to stress concentration and more expensive, so it is mostly used in occasions with special requirements such as heavy load, high temperature, small size, light weight and good wear resistance. It should be pointed out that the difference in elastic modulus between alloy steel and carbon steel is very small, so in the case of the same shape and size, replacing carbon steel with alloy steel cannot improve the rigidity of the shaft. In addition, when designing alloy steel shafts, attention must be paid to structurally reducing stress concentration and reducing its surface roughness.

What materials are suitable for shafts
  • Cast iron ductile iron and high-strength cast iron are suitable for shafts with complex shapes or large rotating shafts. Its advantages are that it does not require forging equipment, is cheap, has good matrix absorption, and is not sensitive to stress concentration; its disadvantages are low impact toughness and difficult to control casting quality. There are two forms of blanks: bar and forging. The former is used for single-piece small batch production,

especially for stepped shafts with similar diameters of smooth shafts and outer circles. For stepped shafts with large differences, forgings are often used. Forgings can also achieve high tensile, flexural and torsional strengths. Single-piece small batch production generally adopts free section, while mass production adopts die forging. In mass production, if seamless steel pipe blanks with through holes are used, material and machining volume can be greatly saved. This shaft belongs to medium and small shafts. In the heavy work of the reducer, it needs to bear various loads and impact loads and has high fatigue resistance and good wear resistance, so the shaft material can meet its requirements by using 45 steel.

Machining process of shaft parts
    • Rough turning - semi-finishing turning - fine turning For commonly used materials, this is the most important processing route used for processing the outer surface.
    • Rough turning - semi-finishing - rough grinding - fine grinding For steel materials, when the requirements of high precision and small surface roughness value are required, and the parts need to be hardened, the subsequent processes are often ground.
    • Rough turning - semi-finishing turning - fine turning - diamond turning For non-ferrous metals, it is usually not suitable to obtain the required surface roughness by grinding, because non-ferrous metals are generally soft and easy to block the gaps between sand grains. Therefore, the final process mostly uses fine turning and diamond turning.

    • Rough turning - semi-finishing - rough grinding - fine grinding - finishing For hardened parts of iron and steel materials, this processing route is often used for high precision and small surface roughness requirements.

How We Make Precision Shaft Parts
Kamikawa Precision according to customer drawing requirements. All use high-precision CNC machining shaft parts.
For shaft parts requiring heat treatment. High frequency heat treatment is usually used between HRC45 and 50 degrees.
The surface is processed by a centerless grinder or a cylindrical grinder. The diameter tolerance can reach ±0.0001". The surface finish can reach Ra0.4~0.2um.

Kamikawa precision CNC machining classic case
Our CNC machining technology can not only process high-precision dimensions, but also provide customers with various surface treatment technologies. Many customers have relatively high requirements on the surface of their products, and some factories can meet the size requirements, but they always fail to do surface treatment. This makes customers very dissatisfied. If you choose to cooperate with us, we will provide you with unexpected technologies and services.
